Canadian Civics

Privacy Policy

Effective date: October 22, 2026 · Version 2026-09-27

This Privacy Policy explains how Harry Singh ("we", "us", "our") collects, uses, discloses and protects personal information when you use the Canadian Civics website and its related services (the "Service"). It is written to meet Canada's Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and applicable provincial privacy laws, and it also describes rights you may have under other laws such as the EU/UK GDPR and U.S. state privacy laws. Please also read our Terms of Service.

Important: Information about governments, elected officials, electoral boundaries, bills and votes is compiled from public and third-party sources and may be incomplete, out of date or wrong. It is general information only and not legal, electoral or political advice. Always check official sources — such as Elections Canada, the House of Commons, and provincial and municipal government websites — before making any decision.

1. Information we collect

You can browse the Service without creating an account or telling us who you are.

If you have an account

Technical information

Like most websites, our servers and infrastructure providers automatically receive technical data such as IP address, browser type, pages requested and timestamps in server logs, used for security and to keep the Service running.

We do not use advertising, analytics or tracking tools, and we do not build profiles of your political views. We do not ask for, and ask that you do not send us, information about your political opinions or voting intentions.

2. How we use your information

We rely on your consent (for example, when you choose to share your location or create an account), and, where the GDPR applies, on our legitimate interests in operating and securing the Service. We do not sell your personal information or share it for targeted advertising.

3. How we share information

To provide the Service, some information is sent to service providers and public-data services:

These providers have their own privacy policies. We may also disclose information if required by law, to protect the rights, property or safety of you, us or others, in connection with a sale or transfer of the Service, or with your consent.

4. Cookies and local storage

We do not use tracking or advertising cookies. The website stores a small amount of information in your browser's local storage to remember interface settings (such as whether the sidebar is collapsed) and, for signed-in administrators, a sign-in token. You can clear this at any time in your browser settings.

5. Where your information is stored

Our service providers may store or process information in Canada, the United States, Europe or other countries, so your information may be stored or processed outside your province or country. In those places it is subject to local laws and may be accessible to courts and authorities there.

6. How long we keep it

We keep account information while the account is active and delete it when the account is closed, except where we must keep it longer by law. Searches are not stored against your identity. Server and security logs are kept only as long as needed for security and troubleshooting. Deleted data may remain in backups for a limited period before it is overwritten.

7. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical and physical safeguards appropriate to the sensitivity of the information, such as encryption in transit, hashed passwords and access controls. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security. If a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we will notify affected people and the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada as required by law.

8. Your rights and choices

Subject to applicable law, you may ask to access, correct or delete personal information we hold about you, withdraw your consent, and — where the GDPR or similar laws apply — object to or restrict processing and receive a portable copy of your data. Email us at the address below; we may need to verify your identity and will respond within the period the law requires. You may also complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada, the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario where it has jurisdiction, or your local data protection authority.

9. Children

The Service is a general-audience educational resource. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us personal information, contact us and we will take reasonable steps to delete it.

10. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. We will post the new version here with a new effective date and, for significant changes, give reasonable notice on the website.
